Malaysia’s Immigration Department has introduced a 10-year maximum validity period for the Malaysian International Passport (PMA), effective August 12.
The department did not indicate that existing passports would automatically become invalid. Instead, the measures are intended to address cases where travellers may face difficulties because their documents exceed the 10-year validity threshold recognised under the revised policy.
Authorities said the revised policy was introduced to create a consistent approach to passport validity and reduce uncertainty for Malaysians travelling internationally.
Under the new arrangement, the Immigration Department will work with airlines to minimise disruptions for passengers whose passports are affected. Airlines will receive official notices explaining the change, allowing them to better assist Malaysian travellers at the point of departure or during international journeys.
Malaysians holding passports that exceed the newly established validity limit will also be given priority when applying for replacement documents.
Moreover, the move was part of wider efforts to streamline the administration of Malaysian International Passports and ensure their requirements are applied consistently.
It added that the updated arrangement would help make international travel less complicated for Malaysian citizens by reducing potential discrepancies between passport validity and travel requirements.
Through the new measures, the department said it aims to provide greater clarity for travellers while improving coordination with airlines and ensuring that Malaysians affected by the change can obtain replacement passports without unnecessary delays.
