The Dili International Film Festival (DIFF) has partnered with the US Embassy in Dili to launch Freedom 250: The Spirit of America in Film, a cultural initiative that will bring a series of film screenings and educational workshops to Timor-Leste over the coming months.
The programme forms part of the global Freedom 250 campaign commemorating the 250th anniversary of the US. Through cinema, DIFF aims to strengthen cultural exchange while providing local audiences and aspiring filmmakers with opportunities to engage with American storytelling and filmmaking traditions.
The initiative officially began on July 16 at the Fundação Oriente with a free public screening of Akeelah and the Bee. The inspirational film, which explores themes of confidence, mentorship and the transformative role of education, attracted students, emerging creatives, DIFF alumni, members of the diplomatic corps and the wider public. The opening event also featured a spelling bee demonstration and classic cinema refreshments, creating an interactive experience for attendees.
Building on the festival’s commitment to developing Timor-Leste’s creative sector, DIFF will host a series of hands-on filmmaking workshops in August in collaboration with the US Embassy. The sessions will be led by American film educator Professor DJ Johnson, a long-time mentor to young Timorese filmmakers and a three-time visitor to the country. Around 30 participants are expected to receive training in storytelling, filmmaking techniques, creative development and career pathways before presenting their work at a curated screening.
Later in the year, DIFF 2026 will feature US Movie Night on October 15, with a screening of the acclaimed film Forrest Gump at Platinum Cineplex, Timor Plaza. Festival organisers said additional screenings are currently being planned, underscoring DIFF’s ongoing efforts to use cinema as a platform for learning, cultural dialogue and the growth of Timor-Leste’s film community.
