Laos discusses tourism cooperation with the UK

On April 25, Laos Minister of Culture and Tourism Suansavanh Vignaket welcomed British Ambassador to Laos Mel Barlow for a courtesy meeting aimed at strengthening tourism cooperation between the two countries.

During the discussion, the minister highlighted the steady growth of British visitors to Laos. In 2025, the country recorded 43,431 arrivals from the United Kingdom (UK), reflecting a continued increase compared with the previous year. According to her, British tourists generally fall into two main groups: older travellers seeking cultural, historical and nature-based experiences, and younger visitors who are increasingly interested in adventure tourism.

The minister also reaffirmed that tourism remains a priority sector for the Lao government due to its contribution to national socio-economic development. Meanwhile, Ambassador Barlow praised Laos’ natural landscapes, cultural heritage, and distinctive traditions, while also noting the need for clearer tourism information and stronger safety standards, particularly for high-risk adventure activities.

Moreover, the said the government is working with relevant sectors to improve safety and hygiene standards, strengthen food and beverage safety, reduce noise pollution and expand digital communication to better inform international visitors. She also stressed that stricter enforcement would be applied to tourism operators who fail to comply with regulations.

The meeting took place as the British Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) issued a travel advisory for UK visitors travelling to Laos as the latter issued a new regulation mandating foreign nationals must complete the Laos Digital Immigration Form (LDIF) within three days before both arrival and departure.

The digital requirement applies at major entry points, including Wattay International Airport in Vientiane, Luang Prabang International Airport, Pakse International Airport and the Lao-Thai Friendship Bridge I, replacing traditional paper arrival and departure cards. Travellers are advised to submit the form in advance to avoid delays or possible entry refusal.
