On July 22, Malaysia-registered AirBorneo Airways made its international debut with encouraging passenger demand, reporting that its new service between Kuching and Singapore is already nearly 80% booked for next year’s Chinese New Year travel period in February 2027.

The Sarawak-based carrier commenced by deploying a Boeing 737-800 on the route to Singapore’s Changi Airport Terminal 4. The launch comes just days after the airline introduced domestic flights connecting Kuching and Kuala Lumpur on July 20, marking the first phase of its network expansion.

Chairman Amar Haji Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki described the inauguration of the Singapore service as a landmark achievement for both AirBorneo and the Malaysian state of Sarawak. He said the route reflects the airline’s broader ambition to improve regional air links while supporting the state’s economic development through stronger tourism, investment and business connections.

Moreover, he noted that Singapore was selected because of its strategic role as a regional hub, adding that the direct service is expected to encourage closer commercial cooperation and greater exchanges between the two destinations. He said enhanced connectivity would also help advance Sarawak’s long-term growth by making the state more accessible to investors and visitors alike.

Chief executive Megat shared a similar view, saying Singapore was the logical choice for AirBorneo’s first overseas destination. He pointed to the city-state’s status as a major aviation gateway and commercial centre in Southeast Asia, as well as its well-established economic relationship with Sarawak, as key factors behind the decision.

At present, AirBorneo operates one return flight each day on its Kuching-Singapore and Kuching-Kuala Lumpur services. The airline said these routes represent the opening stage of a wider expansion programme, with plans to strengthen Sarawak’s air connectivity and gradually extend its presence across the region.

What does this mean for businesses?

The launch of AirBorneo’s Singapore route could be seen as an approach to strengthen Sarawak’s economic ties with one of Southeast Asia’s leading financial and aviation hubs by making business travel, tourism and investment more accessible. Improved connectivity could encourage greater visitor arrivals, facilitate trade, attract foreign investment and support industries ranging from hospitality and retail to logistics and transport. The strong early demand for the route, with around 80% of seats already booked for the Chinese New Year period, also indicates healthy market confidence and suggests the service could become a commercially viable foundation for AirBorneo’s broader international expansion plans.
