On August 29, Cameroon is preparing to send a high-level delegation to Phnom Penh for the 20th Francophonie Summit in November, signalling continued efforts to deepen relations with Cambodia and strengthen cooperation within the French-speaking community.

The summit, set for November 15 to 16 2026, will bring together heads of state, government leaders and representatives from around 90 Francophone countries and institutions.

Cameroonian Senator H.E. Dr Pierre Flambeau Ngayap confirmed his country’s participation while attending the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference in Phnom Penh. He said Cameroon’s government would join the gathering as part of its longstanding involvement in the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

Beyond the summit itself, the senator sees room for the two countries to develop broader cooperation. He pointed to the importance of sharing experience and expanding bilateral relations across different sectors, describing Cambodia-Cameroon ties as already strong.

For Cambodia, hosting the Francophonie Summit also offers an opportunity to raise its profile among French-speaking nations. Sok Limsrorn, Deputy Director of the Department of French at the Institute of Foreign Languages of the Royal University of Phnom Penh, said the event could help advance Cambodia’s diplomatic and economic links while introducing its culture and hospitality to international visitors.

He noted that Cambodians have maintained an appreciation for the French language and Francophone culture, adding that the country hopes to welcome delegates with its reputation for warmth, openness and peacefulness.

Founded on 20 March 1970, the OIF currently brings together 90 states and governments. Cambodia initially joined as an observer in 1991 and gained full membership two years later at the Francophonie Summit in Mauritius.
