Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto departed for Moscow, Russia, on the night of April 12. The president plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss several global agenda and trends.

Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya stated, “President Prabowo is scheduled to hold a one-on-one meeting with President Vladimir Putin in the afternoon.” Teddy explained that, “Amidst constantly changing global dynamics, this meeting is crucial.”

National energy security was a topic of discussion for Indonesia, with Indonesia aiming to secure long-term supplies from Russia. As stated by Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Spokesperson Dwi Anggia, “This working visit is a continuation of the partnership between the two countries, in this case, for Indonesia, it is for long-term national energy security.”

Teddy reaffirmed that, “We [Indonesia] are continuing our cooperation with the Russian government and ensuring a stable national energy supply, including the availability of oil.”

During the visit, President Prabowo was accompanied by, among others, Minister of Foreign Affairs Sugiono, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia, and Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya.

The contingent arrived at Vnukovo-2 airport on April 13. Upon arriving, Prabowo and his colleagues were welcomed by Indonesia’s Ambassador Jose Tavares, and Defence Attaché Air Vice Marshal Budi Susilo, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko and State Protocol Director Igor Bogdashev.

During the meeting, Prabowo primarily conveyed congratulatory remarks for the celebration of Orthodox Easter and Cosmonautics Day

The discussion then moved to substantive issues, with both countries agreeing to advance their bilateral ties in several key sectors such as industry, energy, space, economics, agriculture, monetary relations and pharmaceuticals. Prabowo also extended gratitude for Russia’s strong support of Indonesia’s membership bid in BRICS.

Putin, in turn, further emphasised that Indonesia’s entry into BRICS would provide significant access to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Beyond energy, both leaders are expected to discuss global geopolitical conditions. Indonesia also aims to share and voice its active role in maintaining peace and stability.

Indonesia is on the brink of an energy crisis due to the ongoing war in the Middle East as it is highly dependent on fuel oil. Furthermore, domestic refineries lack the capacity to process the oil produced.

To overcome adverse effects, the Indonesian government has introduced the work-from-home scheme every Friday to decrease the consumption of fuel. The government also continues to subsidise fuel oil, which carries the risk of losses and deficits that reduce the state budget if it is not properly targeted.
