The severe flooding that hit Bangkok since September 24 had disrupted flight operations at a number of airports. Although all airports in Thailand remain operational, a number of flights have been affected, leading to passengers’ luggage being stranded in the airport areas.

Thailand’s Minister of Tourism and Sport, Surasak Phancharoenworakul, said the backlog of passenger luggage handled by Thai Airways, coupled with flight delays caused by the flooding, has damaged Thailand’s image and undermined confidence in its tourism sector. Torrential rain and flooding in Bangkok over the weekend are reported to have caused a backlog of around 5,600 pieces of passenger luggage, as well as 330 Thai Airways flights.

Furthermore, he explained that this situation was caused by hundreds of airline staff being stranded at home due to the flooding and unable to work at Thailand’s two main international airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang.

The situation worsened where around 5,600 pieces of luggage from Thai Airways flights remain halted at the airports. The airline revealed that 34 flights were delayed on September 28, whilst luggage from 52 flights operating between September 26 to 27 is still being sorted and delivered to registered passengers.  It explained that heavy rain and flooding in Bangkok had hampered the work of around 300 ground handling staff and specialist personnel at the airport.

Thailand was swamped in flood caused by torrential rain, with the death toll rising to 23 people as per September 29. Bangkok was declared a disaster zone as heavy thunderstorms continued to approach the capital city.
