Pro-junta party leads in Myanmar election amid civil war and conflict exclusions

Myanmar’s military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has extended its lead after the second round of voting in the three-stage general election, official results show on January 16. The USDP won a large share of the 100 seats contested, pushing it toward a parliamentary majority ahead of the final round scheduled for January 25. The election is being held amid ongoing civil war, and critics argue the polls aren’t free. Many areas remain excluded from voting due to armed conflict.
