Fire hotspots in Lumajang’s Bromo area have been cleared as per August 9 2026, with three helicopters continuing water-bombing operations to extinguish remaining embers. (BPBD Lumajang)
On August 9, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lumajang, East Java, Indonesia, sent a Rapid Response Team (TRC) to help tackle a forest and land fire in Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS).
The fire broke out near the B29 peak, a popular tourist site in Argosari village, Lumajang. The team was sent to the area to help monitor and control the fire around Bukit Sentigi Renteng and Ledok Bedor.
BPBD Lumajang Chief Executive Isnugroho said the agency had been monitoring the situation since August 6. Preparations were also made in case the fire spread towards Lumajang. Subsequently on August 8, the TRC team reached Ledok Bedor to help put out the fire and check the situation. The team returned to the BPBD office at around 4pm as it became dark.
The response involved TNBTS Resort Ranupane, BPBD Lumajang, the Argosari military post, Senduro police and local Fire Care groups from Ranupane and Argosari. Officials also worked with the Senduro district coordination forum.
Firefighters used simple methods on the ground, including making firebreaks and suppressing the flames with wet branches. Some trees near an alternative route were also cut down to stop the fire from spreading.
The operation was also supported by water-bombing helicopters. Two helicopters were deployed to water the fire on August 7 and continued on the next day.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated, while officials are assessing the total area affected.Authorities said they would continue monitoring the situation and working together to control the fire, while prioritising the safety of residents and emergency personnel.
