Indonesia’s national football team lifted the FIFA ASEAN CUP 2026 trophy after they won against Thailand in final match which took place at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta, on October 5, 2026 (PSSI)

On October 5, Indonesia’s national football team for the first time won the 1st edition of FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, through a 4-2 penalty against Thailand following a 2-2 draw after extra time in the final match, which took place at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.

The match remained level for much of normal time, with both teams creating opportunities but unable to score. Indonesia broke the deadlock in the 84th minute when Dean James converted a free-kick from outside the penalty area. The set piece was awarded after Thailand’s Nicholas Mickelson committed a foul and was shown a second yellow card.

Thailand equalised three minutes later through Iklas Sanron, making the score 1-1 and sending the match into extra time, then took the lead in the 111th minute when Peerapol Chamrasamee scored to make it 2-1. Indonesia responded in the 116th minute through Elkan Baggott, who levelled the score at 2-2.

No further goals were scored during the remainder of extra time, and the title was decided by a penalty shootout. Indonesia converted four penalties to Thailand’s two to secure the championship.

The victory gave Indonesia the first title in the history of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, which was introduced in 2026 as a regional competition involving national teams from Southeast Asia and invited teams from outside the region. Indonesia was among the host countries for the inaugural edition, providing a venue for matches as the new tournament sought to establish a broader regional football competition.
