Global tech investors are preparing a massive 20 billion US dollar investment pipeline to build 1.3 gigawatts (GW) of new data centre capacity in Indonesia.
According to the minister, American tech giant Nvidia plans to enter the Indonesian market through a collaboration with Australian partners. He further noted that, “there is direct investment from Telkom itself, while in Karawang, almost all big tech companies will develop and expand their data centres. It is because data centres are currently the absolute key to artificial intelligence (AI), which relies heavily on quantum computing”.
To support rapid digital infrastructure growth, Minister Hartarto emphasised that the government is aggressively developing human resources. He explained that the digital strategy targets the upstream sector first to eventually drive downstream development, making human resources the absolute key to success.
Earlier, Indonesia formed a strategic partnership with British semiconductor company Arm Ltd. to strengthen its upstream digital industry by integrating 15,000 local engineers into the global Arm ecosystem.
What does this mean for businesses?
If realised, the massive expansion of 1.3 GW of hyper-scale data centre capacity in Indonesia, focused on hubs like Karawang and Batam, will transform Southeast Asian business operations by drastically lowering costs, reducing data latency and facilitating AI adoption while ensuring compliance with national data sovereignty. This development will also directly address the regional tech skills deficit and provide a robust ecosystem for scaling digital infrastructure without relying on foreign expertise. However, to unlock this potential, the government must first and foremost play a crucial role in improving the ease of doing business to attract and retain these vital investments.
