On June 9, a collection of  ancient Khmer artifacts from Cambodia spanning from prehistoric times to the post-Angkorian era was transported to China to be showcased at the Shanxi Museum for a five-month exhibition.

The exhibition is being held under the title “Angkor and the Art of Ancient Khmer” from June 5 to October 7, 2026, in Taiyuan, the capital of Shanxi Province. The inauguration and installation were organised by an expert team led by the Secretary of State Ly Vanna, approved by the Minister of Culture and Fine arts Phoeurng Sackona. The artifacts were curated from the collection of the National Museum of Cambodia. The collection was carefully selected from the holdings of the National Museum of Cambodia and includes pieces that illustrate the evolution of Khmer civilisation across different historical periods.

According to the Minister of Culture, the showcase aims to spotlight the richness of ancient Khmer art which existed 1.000 years ago. It further underscores the long-standing historical ties between Cambodia and China, whose interactions date back centuries through trade, diplomacy and cultural exchange.

While the exhibition offers a glimpse into the rich ancient Khmer civilisation, it also underscores the broader history of interaction between Cambodia and China. The exhibition, therefore, stands not only as a celebration of Cambodia’s heritage but also as a testament to the enduring cultural connections that have linked the two civilisations for centuries.
