On May 18, the start of the Mekong-Lancang Caravan Tour was marked by the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism’s partnership with relevant stakeholders. This initiative aims to deepen cooperation in the tourism sector between Cambodia and China.
Organised as part of Cambodia–China Tourism Year 2026, the Mekong–Lancang Caravan Tour is one of twelve major activities planned for the initiative. The 23-day caravan tour departed from Phnom Penh on May 18 and will conclude in Yunnan. The route will take the convoy through Stung Treng Province before crossing into Laos and continuing onward to Yunnan in China. Participants are scheduled to return to Phnom Penh via Laos on June 9.
Delegations from Cambodia and China attended the opening ceremony in Phnom Penh, led by the Cambodian Minister of Tourism, H.E Huoet Hak. According to him, the Mekong- Lancang Caravan Tour will strengthen the Cambodia- China Tourism Year, as it harmonises cultures, traditions and tourism potential from both countries.
President of the Cambodian Association of Travel Agents, Chhay Sivlin, said the cross-border caravan tour represents an important tourism and cultural initiative that embodies the spirit of solidarity, friendship and regional cooperation. She added that the tour supports the implementation of the Cambodia–China Tourism Year 2026 and reflects a strong commitment to strengthening cultural exchanges, tourism collaboration and economic connectivity among Cambodia, Laos and China.
Data from the Ministry of Tourism Cambodia shows that Cambodia received more than one million international visitors in the first quarter of 2026, including around 240,000 tourists from China.
