Philippines to review US-led Board of Peace invitation amid budget concerns

US President Donald Trump has invited the Philippines to join his proposed Board of Peace, Philippine Ambassador to Washington Jose Manuel Romualdez said on February 5. Trump had written to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and that Manila is reviewing the invitation, including the level of commitment required. Romualdez affirmed that the Philippines supports international peace initiatives but faces financial limitations.

The board initially envisioned to oversee Gaza’s rehabilitation, has since been expanded into a broader platform aimed at mediating global conflicts. Permanent membership reportedly requires a contribution of US$1 billion, with Vietnam and Indonesia already participating as non-permanent members. The Philippines may instead offer non-financial support, such as human resources, as it is currently unable to make a monetary contribution due to internal funding concerns.
