On August 28, the Sports Authority of Vietnam (SAV) confirmed that Vietnam’s national delegation is aiming to improve on its previous Asian Games performance after naming a 348-strong athlete contingent for this year’s competition in Japan.

The delegation will comprise 498 people. Alongside the athletes, 150 coaches, officials, administrators and members of the support team will travel to Aichi-Nagoya. SAV deputy director Nguyễn Hồng Minh will lead the delegation as chef de mission.

The 20th Asian Games will be held from September 19 to October 4, with competitors contesting 469 gold medals across 43 sports and 71 disciplines.

Vietnam’s athletes are scheduled to appear in 33 sports, covering both established disciplines and newer additions to the Games. The programme includes athletics, swimming, shooting, weightlifting, rowing, canoeing, sepak takraw, karate, taekwondo, gymnastics, archery, boxing, wrestling, cycling and wushu. Vietnamese representatives will also compete in jiu jitsu, volleyball, football, judo, golf, badminton, fencing, sailing, teqball, esports, break dance and mixed martial arts.

For the delegation, the immediate objective is to secure at least four gold medals while breaking into the top 20 of the overall standings. The team will receive an official send-off in Hanoi on September 9 before departing for Japan.

At the previous Asian Games in China, Vietnam collected 27 medals, comprising three golds, five silvers and 19 bronzes, which placed the country 22nd overall. Its titles came in sepak takraw, karate and shooting, three disciplines in which Vietnam will seek to retain its championship status this time.
