On August 28, Philippine authorities moved to assist citizens who may have been caught in the devastating floods that have hit parts of Nepal, as the death toll from the disaster continued to rise.
The Philippine Embassy in New Delhi and the country’s Honorary Consulate General in Kathmandu are working with Nepalese officials to establish the whereabouts of affected Filipino nationals and determine what assistance they require.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro announced the government’s response, citing information from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA). She said Philippine diplomatic missions were already engaging with authorities on the ground and were prepared to support Filipinos affected by the disaster.
Particular attention is being given to reports of a Filipino citizen who may have gone missing amid the flooding. According to her, Philippine officials are still waiting for Nepalese authorities to verify the report before confirming the individual’s status.
The Nepal Tourism Board had earlier reported that more than 500 foreign nationals were unaccounted for following the flash floods. A Filipino citizen was included among those reported missing, although the figures remain preliminary.
Information collected from trekking operators and travel agencies formed the basis of the tourism board’s initial assessment, highlighting the impact of the floods on popular trekking destinations and surrounding communities.
Nepal has suffered extensive loss of life as emergency efforts continue. Police figures released put the number of deaths at 469. Philippine authorities are expected to maintain contact with their counterparts in Nepal while awaiting further details concerning the missing Filipino and other nationals who may have been affected.
