Vietnamese authentic sandwich Bánh mì has been ranked among the world’s best sandwiches and wraps, earning three positions on TasteAtlas’ 2026 list. Based on this year’s list, Turkey’s Tombik Döner is at the top of the ranking, while Lebanon’s Shawarma secured fourth place. These rankings aim to highlight popular sandwiches and wraps from different continents, curated by international and local food enthusiasts, while helping local foods gain wider recognition.
The Vietnamese dishes secured several positions on the list based on their main ingredients. To begin, Bánh mì heo quay or roasted pork belly Bánh mì secured the second position on the list. This sandwich is made with baguette and roasted pork belly as the protein. It is then stacked with pickled carrots and daikon, cucumbers, cilantro and chives which have been combined with mayonnaise. Secondly, Bánh mì thịt or meat and cold cuts Bánh mì, is world’s fifth-favourite. The difference between these sandwiches relies on the main ingredient, where Bánh mì thịt uses various Vietnamese cold cuts.
Bánh mì itself has evolved since the French occupied Vietnam in the early 19th century, where they carried out baguette as a daily food commodity to the country. Gradually, day-to-day behaviour shaped the local culture, where French food influence took an important place in Vietnamese daily life. Later, they adapted the baguette by combining it with local ingredients to enrich the taste.
As Bánh mì continues to gain global recognition, the sandwich remains a symbol of Vietnam’s culinary creativity and cultural heritage. Its success on international rankings reflects both its enduring appeal and its growing influence beyond Vietnam’s borders.
