On June 17, Laos hosted an inclusive community event, “The Disability Inclusion Fun Day”, with an aim to promote disability awareness and equal participation. The event brought together people from a wide range of backgrounds to encourage mutual learning and greater social inclusion.
Designed as a welcoming environment for everyone, the event highlighted the importance of accessibility and disability rights through interactive activities that encouraged participants to exchange experiences and celebrate individual talents. Many visitors took part in inclusive games, creative workshops, awareness exhibitions, sign language sessions, artistic performances and discussions addressing disability inclusion.
The event also explored issues affecting persons with disabilities beyond accessibility, including access to sexual and reproductive health information, protection against gender-based violence, skills development and opportunities for active participation in economic and community life.
Addressing visitors, Hands of Hope representative Santhavy Oudavone stressed that genuine inclusion means recognising people for their abilities rather than their physical conditions. She said events of this nature provided an opportunity for persons with disabilities to demonstrate their talents, ambitions and ideas while reinforcing their equal right to learn, work, participate and contribute to society.
A crucial moment during the event was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) intended to strengthen cooperation on disability inclusion and social work. The partnership will support research, volunteering, student engagement, knowledge sharing, awareness campaigns and community-based initiatives that benefit persons with disabilities.
Organisers also emphasised that creating an inclusive society depends on collaboration between communities, educational institutions, civil society organisations, the private sector and young people. They reaffirmed that everyone should enjoy equal access to information, education, employment and decision-making while living with dignity and security. The event also acknowledged the ongoing efforts of organisations representing persons with disabilities, volunteers and civil society groups advocating for accessibility and equal rights across Laos.
