Observed on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the eighth lunar month (B.E. 2569), the occasion is among the most important religious events in the country. From capital Vientiane across provincial communities, worshippers took part in merit-making activities and offered alms to monks as part of customs that have been preserved for generations.
Religious ceremonies held throughout the day included the recitation of Buddhist scriptures, sermons by monks and prayers attended by large numbers of devotees. Many temples also received support from local benefactors, who provided complimentary food and drinks for visitors through charity stalls set up within temple grounds.
The festival also marks the start of Vassa, a sacred period during which Buddhist monks remain at their monasteries for three months. During the retreat, they devote more time to meditation, religious study, teaching the Dharma and maintaining temple facilities rather than travelling.
For members of the public, Boun Khao Phansa represents more than the beginning of Buddhist Lent. It is widely regarded as an occasion to strengthen spiritual practice, perform acts of generosity and dedicate merit to deceased relatives and ancestors in accordance with long-established Laos traditions.
