On June 29, a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Laos and Cuba to strengthen their bilateral ties in sports and physical education cooperation. The agreement aims to reinforce sports development and initiatives in Laos.
Representatives from Laos and Cuba formalised the agreement during a signing ceremony held at the Laos Ministry of Education and Sports. The document was signed by Kingmano Phommahaxay, Deputy Minister of Education and Sports, President of the National Paralympic Committee and Vice President of the National Olympic Committee, alongside Enna E. Viant Valdes, Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Laos. The event was witnessed by senior officials from the Department of International Cooperation, the Department of Mass Sports, Physical and Arts Education, as well as other relevant government agencies.
By signing the MoU, both countries reaffirm their bilateral cooperation in the fields of sports, physical education and arts education. Moreover, it provides opportunities for knowledge-sharing, technical collaboration and consultations across agreed areas.
Over the past decades, Cuba has remained a strategic partner in fostering Lao human resource development. The country has provided scholarships for Lao students to study sports and physical education, alongside other disciplines such as Spanish, medicine and law. Furthermore, Cuba has delegated numerous experienced coaches to Laos with an aim to assist boxing and athletics national athletes. This initiative encourages coaching capabilities and enhances athletic performance.
Addressing the signing ceremony, Deputy Minister Kingmano Phommahaxay thanked the Cuban Ambassador Enna E. Viant Valdes and, through her, the Government of Cuba for its continued commitment to supporting human resource development in Laos. He highlighted the partnership’s significant contribution to the country’s sports sector and said he was confident the renewed agreement would deepen bilateral cooperation while helping to raise Laos’ sporting standards to meet international levels.
