On February 12, the Indonesian Navy Chief Adm. Muhammad Ali announced that the government is currently in talks with Italy regarding the possible acquisition of Indonesia’s first aircraft carrier, the currently Italian-operated Giuseppe Garibaldi. He added that the Navy expected to possess the vessel before the armed forces’ day on October 5 this year. Ali stated that the carrier will primarily be used for non-war operations, including humanitarian missions and emergency relief.
Separately, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence explained that Rome will give the ship to Jakarta without a fee. However, the Indonesian armed forces will be fully responsible for the financial burden of the vessel’s refitting.
