Timor-Leste is set to host the Dili International Marathon on August 8, an event widely regarded as the country’s premier long-distance race. Each year, the marathon attracts both elite athletes and recreational runners from around the world, offering participants the chance to compete along one of Southeast Asia’s most scenic coastal routes. With its growing international appeal, the race continues to strengthen Timor-Leste’s presence in the regional sporting calendar.
The marathon is organised in collaboration with the Federação de Timor-Leste de Atletismo (FTA) and held under the patronage of José Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Leste and a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. This year’s edition carries the theme “Love our forests and wildlife”, emphasising the country’s remarkable biodiversity and encouraging greater awareness of environmental protection.
Participants may choose from four race categories designed to accommodate different abilities and interests. These include the full marathon (42.2 km), half marathon (21.1 km), a 10 km inclusive para-event for para-athletes and a 5 km fun run open to runners of all ages. In addition, organisers have announced a total prize pool of 75,000 US dollars..
To strengthen the country’s athletic performance, a national training initiative has been introduced to support leading Timorese distance runners ahead of the race. The programme offers structured coaching, sports science assistance and competitive opportunities aimed at developing a strong national squad.
Medical support for the event will also be reinforced through collaboration with Australia’s National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre (NCCTRC). On April 22, President Ramos-Horta expressed pride in partnering with one of the world’s leading emergency response organisations, noting that the cooperation reflects the close and enduring relationship between Timor-Leste and Australia.
