More than 4.3 million domestic and international visitors poured into Phnom Penh during the celebrations of Khmer New Year, traditionally celebrated between April 13 and 14, far exceeding expectations and reinforcing the capital’s reputation as a leading holiday destination.

Tourist numbers steadily climbed between April 14 and 16, reaching their highest point on the final day when over 1.8 million people took part in festivities across the city. Much of the activities centred on the Nokor Sankranta celebrations, which were staged at six main venues throughout 14 districts. International arrivals also rose sharply during the period, with the number of foreign visitors nearly tripling from the first to the second day and reaching close to 18,000 visitors.

In addition, around 1.85 million travellers visited Siem Reap province during the same festive period, highlighting the province’s enduring popularity as one of the country’s most attractive holiday destinations. Local authorities working with the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia, arranged a variety of cultural programmes across Siem Reap. Events ranged from traditional boat races and dragon boat competitions to leisurely river cruises, providing visitors with a broader and more immersive holiday experience.

Despite global economic pressures, such as rising fuel prices and regional border sensitivities, many tourists praised the province for maintaining a stable and secure environment throughout the celebrations.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hun Manet on April 17 expressed appreciation to government agencies, institutions and individuals whose contributions helped ensure that this year’s Khmer New Year festivities were conducted in a joyful, peaceful and secure atmosphere nationwide.
