The state of Perak in Malaysia has intensified efforts to position itself as a prominent cruise tourism destination, as authorities believe the sector could unlock new economic opportunities and broaden the state’s appeal to international travellers.
The arrival of the Star Dream Cruise on June 1, marking its first visit to Perak, was welcomed as a significant milestone. Carrying around 3,000 overseas passengers, the vessel’s stopover is expected to inject fresh momentum into local businesses while showcasing the state’s tourism potential beyond Malaysia’s traditional cruise hubs.
Perak Tourism, Industry, Investment and Corridor Development Committee chairman Loh Sze Yee said the presence of international visitors could generate widespread economic benefits. From restaurants and retail outlets to transport operators and handicraft producers, numerous sectors stand to gain from increased tourist spending. Beyond commercial advantages, cruise tourism is also viewed as a catalyst for long-term development. Officials expect greater global exposure for Perak, which could encourage investment, strengthen tourism infrastructure and enhance visitor services.
The initiative is further anticipated to support job creation, particularly in industries linked to tourism and hospitality. Communities in Lumut, Sitiawan and Ipoh are among those likely to benefit as visitor traffic grows and demand for local services rises. To encourage exploration of the state, cruise passengers are offered several travel options upon arrival. Visitors may take ferry services to Pangkor Island or travel from Marina Island to Ipoh, where various cultural and recreational attractions await.
At the same time, the state government is collaborating with federal authorities to promote community-based tourism products from villages in the Manjung district. Traditional Chinese and Malay culinary offerings are among the local highlights being introduced to overseas travellers as part of efforts to elevate Perak’s cultural identity on the international stage.
Authorities said preparations are already underway for the cruise ship’s next scheduled call on June 22, with tourism, immigration and customs authorities coordinating measures to ensure a smooth and efficient arrival process for passengers.
