On March 20, marking the International Day of Happiness, Vietnam’s development achievements were highlighted as a strong example of how prioritising people can drive national progress. The country has gained global recognition for improving the well-being and happiness of its citizens, reflecting a model that extends beyond economic growth to embrace a more holistic vision of development. According to UNESCO Representative Jonathan Baker, Vietnam’s leadership consistently places the needs, lives, and future of its people at the centre of policymaking.
A key factor behind this success is sustained investment in education and human capital. The government has increased funding for schools, strengthened support for teachers and learners, and expanded access to education, particularly in disadvantaged and remote areas. Initiatives such as the construction of inter-level boarding schools demonstrate a clear commitment to inclusivity and equal opportunity.
Vietnam also stands out for recognising culture as a core pillar of national development. By investing in cultural preservation and promoting national identity, the country fosters social cohesion and enhances citizens’ overall sense of well-being. This balanced approach ensures that economic modernisation does not come at the expense of cultural values.
In addition, a series of government resolutions emphasise the importance of science, technology, innovation, education, and public health. Together, these policies create a coordinated framework that integrates economic transformation with improvements in quality of life, reinforcing a people-centred model of growth.
As Vietnam looks towards its goal of becoming a high-income country by 2045, UNESCO has reaffirmed its commitment to continue working closely with the country to support sustainable and inclusive development. This partnership will help ensure that progress is shared more broadly across society, particularly benefiting communities in remote and disadvantaged areas, thereby sustaining long-term national happiness and prosperity.
