On March 13, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) through The Nation Thailand announced that Bangkok has returned to the global top 10 in the latest Best Cities ranking by Time Out. The Thai capital was placed eighth worldwide for 2026 and ranked as the second-best city in Asia in the annual survey. The ranking draws on the views of writers, local experts and people closely familiar with urban life, assessing cities on factors such as culture, food, nightlife and overall liveability.

According to BMA, Bangkok’s renewed position reflects the city’s growing appeal as a cultural and lifestyle destination. They noted that the capital continues to attract visitors with its vibrant mix of culinary experiences, creative arts and music scenes. The city’s expanding cultural calendar was also highlighted, including the upcoming return of the Bangkok Art Biennale. The international contemporary art event is scheduled to run from 29 October 2026 until 28 February 2027 and is expected to draw artists, curators and visitors from around the world.

Beyond the arts, Bangkok is also expected to benefit from major entertainment events in nearby provinces. BMA pointed out that the globally renowned electronic music festival Tomorrowland is expected to be held in Chon Buri in December 2026. With its extensive transport links and hospitality sector, Bangkok is likely to serve as the main hub for fans travelling to the festival.

Thailand’s overall presence in the ranking was further strengthened by Chiang Mai, which placed 32nd globally and ninth in Asia. The result means Thailand is one of the few countries with two cities included in the 2026 list. In the global top 10, Melbourne secured the top position, followed by Shanghai and Edinburgh. London ranked fourth, while New York and Cape Town completed the top six. Mexico City took seventh place, followed by Bangkok, with Seoul and Tokyo rounding out the list.
