Pro-junta party claims victory in Myanmar’s post-coup elections

Myanmar’s first election after the junta seized power in 2021 was held on December 28.

As expected by analysts, the pro-junta government party, Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) has claimed victory, obtaining 82 of 102 seats in the lower house.

While two more rounds of voting are scheduled to be held in January, early results indicate that there has been a strong tendency for the pro-junta forces.

In total, there are 57 parties with over 4,800 candidates participating in this election. However, only six parties can compete nationwide.
