Speaking at the Johor convention of Parti Keadilan Rakyat on April 5, He underlined Malaysia’s clear opposition to attacks carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran had drawn international recognition and demonstrated the country’s willingness to take principled positions on global issues.
“Do you think it is easy to persuade the Iranian president to allow our ships passage through the Strait of Hormuz?” Anwar said, adding that only a limited number of countries had issued statements as strong as Malaysia’s. He urged opposition figures not to downplay what he described as significant diplomatic achievements.
The prime minister also defended his previous engagements with former and current US leaders, including Donald Trump and Joe Biden, saying the discussions were conducted to safeguard Malaysia’s interests while raising humanitarian concerns over the conflict in Gaza.
“Yes, I negotiated, but I did not compromise the country’s interests,” Anwar said. “I spoke directly about the suffering of Palestinian children and the continued occupation of Gaza.”
He added that Malaysia’s firm positions reflect the government’s reform-oriented principles and its commitment to speaking out on international geopolitical issues. According to Anwar, the approach has helped project Malaysia as a country prepared to voice clear positions on matters affecting global peace and justice.
