On February 24, two days after the country’s legislative elections, the Lao Prime Minister (PM) Sonexay Siphandone led a government meeting in preparation for the 10th National Socio-Economic Development Plan (2026-2030). After the meeting, PM Siphandone emphasised an action plan to modernise revenue collection in a bid to create a self-reliant economy.
Furthermore, the government signalled that some reforms would be rolled out in order to resolve economic and financial challenges while limiting debt burdens, which stood at 94% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024. Beyond fiscal reform, the meeting reviewed tourism performance in 2025 and explored ways to expand the sector, recognising its role in generating foreign exchange and employment.
The group also reviewed draft regulations on transporting dangerous goods by road and rail, and on international non-governmental organisations, aimed at enhancing regulatory clarity, public safety, and effective governance.
