Vientiane residents face ongoing water shortages

The Vientiane Water Supply State Enterprise has warned that the dry season has lowered water levels at the capital’s main treatment plant, disrupting tap water supplies in parts of Vientiane. Officials said on February 13 that falling levels in the Mekong River, which supplies the Chinaimo plant in Sisattanak district, have reduced production and weakened water pressure, especially in higher areas.

However, residents across the capital say water shortages are a long-standing problem, occurring in both the dry and rainy seasons. Many blame poor infrastructure and management. The state enterprise has urged people to use water carefully while it works to address the issue.
