Myanmar authorities have detained 201 men and 28 women following allegations of violating the general election law.
The law, that was formalised last July, states that individuals who speak, organise, incite or distribute letters to disrupt the general election are subjected to 10 years of imprisonment or even death penalty.
The detainees come from various segments of society that oppose the junta, including General Strike Coordination Body members, journalists, actors, pro-democracy militias, and ethnic groups.
MG Zaw Min Tun has responded by dismissing criticisms, stating that the election is for the people of Myanmar and not the international community. The junta’s spokesperson also claimed that Myanmar pursues the return of multi-party democracy.
