Thailand is developing a new surf therapy model as part of its strategy to strengthen the country’s wellness tourism sector through science-based coastal experiences. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) held the Thailand Surf Therapy Real Experienceand Trust Building Journey in Phang-nga on June 18-19, bringing together 36 representatives from the tourism, wellness and media industries. The event served as a preview ahead of the official launch of the initiative at Thailand Health Excellence 2026 on June 30.

Organised with Prince of Songkla University’s Phuket Campus, La Vita Sana, Memories Surf House and South Africa’s Waves for Change, the programme highlighted how surf therapy could boost Thailand’s coastal tourism while supporting emotional and mental well-being.

TAT Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business Nat Kruthasoot said the initiative combines international expertise with Thailand’s coastal assets, local identity and hospitality standards to create meaningful wellness experiences that also benefit local communities and tourism businesses.

Over two days, participants attended discussions on surf therapy, received basic surfing and safety training, and took part in practical sessions at Memories Beach. The programme also featured wellness activities such as water floating and Tibetan singing bowl sound therapy.

The initiative is being further developed through the Rise On Wave network, supported by Span Global, with three pilot programmes designed for stress management and emotional well-being. TAT will officially present the Thailand Surf Therapy model at Thailand Health Excellence 2026 as part of its wider ambition to position Thailand as a leading wellness tourism destination in Asia.
