Malaysia, Türkiye to boost strategic cooperation

On January 9, Malaysia and Türkiye have agreed to strengthen strategic cooperation across defence, energy and high-technology sectors following Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Istanbul. The partnership aims to combine Türkiye’s advanced capabilities in defence, aerospace, drones and nuclear technology with Malaysia’s strengths in energy, semiconductors and electrical and electronics manufacturing. Cooperation will be driven by private-sector partnerships, joint investments and technology transfer, positioning both countries as strategic hubs in their respective regions and gateways to wider regional markets, including ASEAN.

Business implications
For businesses, the agreement signals new opportunities in defence manufacturing, semiconductors, energy infrastructure and emerging technologies such as AI. Malaysian firms gain access to Türkiye’s defence and aerospace expertise, while Turkish companies are encouraged to use Malaysia as a base to expand into ASEAN. Increased joint ventures, cross-border investments and supply-chain integration could follow, particularly in high-value, technology-driven industries with strong government backing.
