Indonesia has officially become the first export customer of South Korea’s KF-21 Boramae fighter jet, with a contract to acquire 16 units in the initial phase. Jakarta became the programme’s first export customer, with plans to buy 16 jet fighters. Deliveries are expected to begin alongside mass production in 2026. This is marked by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s trip to Seoul at the end of March.

Indonesia reaffirmed its commitment to jointly develop the generation 4.5 fighter jet along with South Korea. Despite funding issues that have led to past diplomatic spats, Jakarta has officially become the primary buyer of the stealth aircraft.

This procurement is seen as an important attempt to modernise Indonesia’s Air Force. KF-21 prototype number 005, which is designated to be sent to Indonesia, successfully conducted its first airborne test in May 2023. The fighter is powered with double engine GE F414, capable producing an afterburner thrust of up to 22,000 lbs. Furthermore, the jet has sophisticated technologies: AESA radar, a modern avionic system, as well as a limited stealth ability.

Though there had been some challenges, including issues of outstanding payments and alleged data theft by Indonesian engineers, the collaboration has yielded a good result. The project, which costs around 16,5 trillion won (US$11 billion) was divided for production and system development.

Beyond procurement, Indonesia has emphasised Industrial arrangement under negotiation, including technology transfer and the establishment of maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facilities. These elements are part of a strategic foundation of building domestic aerospace capacity and reducing long-term dependence on foreign suppliers.
