ASEAN’s foreign ministers have urged diplomatic and peaceful solutions to the escalating crisis in Middle East, warning that the conflict could drive up energy prices, worsen inflation and threaten food security across the region. In a joint statement issued after a special meeting proposed by Thailand and chaired by Philippines via video conference on March 13, they expressed serious concern over the situation. Reported from Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, the meeting called on all parties to immediately cease hostilities, exercise maximum restraint and avoid actions that could further aggravate tensions. The statement also stressed the need to protect civilians and critical civilian infrastructure.

Participants reaffirmed that all states have an obligation to resolve disputes through peaceful means and to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations in accordance with international law, including the principles of the United Nations Charter. ASEAN members also reiterated their commitment to providing emergency assistance to ASEAN nationals in affected areas, while acknowledging support already extended among member states. The statement further highlighted the potential for mutually beneficial cooperation with external partners.

Beyond humanitarian concerns, the discussion addressed the wider economic implications of the conflict. Officials emphasised the importance of maintaining stable and reliable global energy supply chains as well as secure maritime trade routes. Minimising disruptions to the flow of energy and essential goods, including food, was seen as crucial to safeguarding economic stability in Southeast Asia. To strengthen regional resilience, ASEAN countries agreed to maximise existing cooperation mechanisms, including the ASEAN Petroleum Security Agreement, the ASEAN Power Grid and the Trans-ASEAN Gas Pipeline.
