Vietnam’s first national conference on livestock and vetenirary science and technology will be held in Hanoi (VNA)

Vietnam is set to host its first national conference on livestock and veterinary science and technology on March 27-28 at the National Convention Centre in Hanoi, marking a significant step in advancing the sector.

At a press briefing on March 23, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said the event, the largest scientific forum of its kind in the country, will gather more than 750 participants from government bodies, research institutes, universities, businesses, industry groups and international organisations. The forum will also assess research outcomes and technological applications from 2021 to 2025, while outlining priorities for 2026–2030, with an emphasis on modernisation, sustainability and digital transformation.

According to the ministry, livestock remains a cornerstone of Vietnam’s agricultural economy, contributing around 26–28% of its total value. The sector plays a crucial role in ensuring food security for nearly 100 million residents and approximately 20 million annual visitors.

Vietnam’s livestock population includes about 31 million pigs, over 500 million poultry, 2 million buffalo, more than 6 million cattle, and roughly 2.8 million goats and sheep, figures that highlight strong growth potential amid rising domestic and export demand.

However, challenges persist. Small-scale farming continues to dominate, reliance on imported breeding stock and inputs remains high, and local veterinary services are uneven. The risk of disease outbreaks also continues to pose a threat. Officials further stressed the need to tackle antibiotic misuse, strengthen food safety, protect the environment and reduce emissions.

The forum will also feature a technology exhibition with around 20 booths, showcasing innovations and encouraging investment, as Vietnam pushes towards a more science-driven and sustainable livestock industry.
