Myanmar’s first phase election has drawn criticism from international bodies, most notably the UN and ASEAN, over allegations of detention, of using coercion and intimidation ahead of the election, while violence was reported in several areas. While the junta has denied it, and stated that the election was widely supported.
On December 30, PM Anwar Ibrahim, ASEAN’s chair in 2025, stated that ‘an assessment will proceed in a sequenced manner’. He said assessments would proceed in stages to avoid violence, avoid deepening polarization and violence, and prevent premature legitimacy.
