Timor-Leste launches rare legal case against Myanmar junta under universal jurisdiction

Timor Leste initiated legal proceedings against Myanmar’s junta, including General Min Aung Hlaing, over alleged crimes against humanity. On February 2, a senior prosecutor was chosen to investigate a complaint from Chin Human Rights Organisation (CHRO), which represents the Chin minority ethnic group.

This unprecedented move marks a rare use of universal jurisdiction among ASEAN member states, allowing domestic courts to hear testimonies and conduct prosecution for serious international law violations.
