Indonesian President defends security forces involvement in food security scheme

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto addressed criticism over the involvement of the military and police in Indonesia’s food self-sufficiency programme on February 13, stating that their participation is intended to support public welfare and national resilience. Speaking in Jakarta at the inauguration of nutrition service units and police food security facilities, he said the armed forces and police have a responsibility to help safeguard citizens, including in addressing food security concerns.

At a separate economic outlook event, Prabowo outlined the positive impact of the Free Nutritious Meals programme, which he said currently employs more than one million people and could create up to 1.5 million daily jobs when fully operational. The initiative, supported by over 23,000 nutrition service kitchens nationwide, aims to reach more than 82 million beneficiaries while contributing to local economic activities.
