The deadly incidents that killed three Indonesian National Armed Forces soldiers serving as peacekeepers in Lebanon sparked widespread reaction in Indonesia.

Some figures, including the Chairman Ahmad Muzani of the People’s Consultative Assembly urged the government to withdraw peacekeeping forces from Lebanon. “The People’s Consultative Assembly urged the UN Security Council to immediately hold an investigative session and impose sanctions on Israel,” he said.

Meanwhile, Indonesian National Armed Forces Commander General Agus Subiyanto instructed the commander of the Indonesian UNIFIL task force in Lebanon. He said, “Maintain the morale of the soldiers there. Maintain internal security. Stay in your bunkers and refrain from any further activity. And maintain the soldiers’ morale and keep them motivated. Thank you. Keep up the good work.”

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto also condemned the unilateral action that resulted in the deaths of three soldiers. In his Instagram account on April 4 he stated, “We, fellow countrymen and women, strongly condemn every heinous act that destroys peace and causes the deaths of the nation’s finest soldiers.”

Indonesian House of Representatives member Dave Laksono calls for a cautious, multi-sectoral evaluation regarding the potential withdrawal of peacekeeping troops, emphasizing that “certainly requires a thorough evaluation” to ensure personnel safety.

Laksono added that Indonesia must maintain its global standing, stating, “Indonesia must also continue to maintain the nation’s honor on the international stage”, while using “preventive measures and constructive diplomacy” to manage threats.

The bodies of the three soldiers were laid to rest at Soekarno-Hatta Airport in Tangerang, Banten, after being flown from Lebanon. They were placed in coffins draped with the Indonesian flag. The three were buried in their respective hometowns in Indonesia with military honors on Sunday, April 5.
