Indonesia and Australia strengthened bilateral ties on February 6 by signing a joint security treaty at Istana Merdeka in Jakarta. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said the agreement, signed with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, reaffirmed both countries’ commitment to enhancing cooperation in safeguarding national security and supporting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Prabowo said the treaty reflected Indonesia’s independent and active foreign policy and its aim to maintain friendly relations with all countries. During the meeting, both leaders also discussed cooperation in agriculture, investment, education and labour, with Indonesia inviting Australia to develop joint agricultural ventures and expand investment in critical minerals processing, while encouraging Indonesian firms to invest in Australia’s mining sector.
