Indonesia appoints president’s relative as central bank deputy

On January 26, Indonesian House of Representatives officially appointed Thomas Djiwandono as the Deputy of the Indonesian Central Bank, who is notably a close relative of the Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto. This appointment drew criticisms from observers, underlining the fear of diminishing Central Bank’s independence, as the rate of the Indonesian rupiah continues to worsen. Moreover, there is a rising concern over possible cabinet reshuffle that involves Thomas’ younger brother, Budi, who is rumored to also be joining his uncle’s cabinet.
